HOUSTON-To save dough on your 'do, you don't need to look any further than a nearby beauty college. They offer salon services that are cheaper than what the tip amounts to at regular salons. Just do a Google search to find one near you.
For example, the beauty college prices are about $6 for a women's haircut and $4 for guys. The colleges charge about $8 for a shampoo and blow dry and $25 to color your hair.
If you go to a cosmetology school, remember you're dealing with students, and they're still learning their trade. But they work on you under the careful eye of an instructor.
"We do train our students to work on all types of clientele, adults, teenagers, children, infants - all ethnicities," said Joe Valdez, educational director at Mai-Trix Beauty College.
Often the beauty schools also offer some spa services. You can get a facial at Mai-Trix for $20. Spas charge about $50. Business is up at his college, Valdez said, and the same is true at others.
Colleges take appointments or walk-ins.
