HOUSTON—A 5-year-old boy was struck by a speeding driver in a high school parking lot Saturday morning, according to police.

A field full of kids was attending football camp at Klein High School—a reason enough for drivers to slow down, said coach Melvin Muhammad.

Practice had just ended and parents were beginning to take their kids into their cars when one caught his attention.

"We saw this white car moving so fast in the parking lot," he said. "But before you could say something, holler slow down or whatever, you heard a thump."

The driver had struck a 5-year-old boy.

Muhammad said the driver of the white car seemed almost unaware of what she had done.

"Because it took her awhile to stop," he said. "That’s what threw me off."

The boy was taken to Texas Children’s Hospital and the extent of his injuries is not known. The case is being investigated by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
