HOUSTON -- The Houston school board has decided to fire five elementary school teachers for allegedly helping students cheat on state exams last year.
School district spokeswoman Tiffany Davila-Dunne confirmed the terminations Thursday night.
The Houston Chronicle reports that attorneys for the teachers at Jefferson Elementary have said they are innocent. They can appeal their firing to the Texas Education Agency.
A district investigation into cheating allegations preceded the decision. The teachers had argued that the evidence comes from children who confused getting help on practice tests with the official state exams.
