HOUSTON – A 4-year-old boy reported missing was found dead in a pond Monday in Liberty County.
The child’s grandmother called 911 at 12:33 p.m. saying the child was missing from a house located in the 4500 block of Private Road 4501.
She assured the dispatcher that the boy had only been missing for about 15 minutes and said they had checked the house, surrounding ponds and ditches to make sure the child was not there.
During the call, a neighbor called the dispatcher to report that a baby was found in a pond.
Responding deputies arrived to find the child’s father at the shore pointing to where his son was. Both of the deputies dived into the 10-foot deep pond and swam out about 30 feet to retrieve the child.
They lifted the child to the shore and performed CPR until EMTs arrived, but the child failed to respond and was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is possible the child had been in the water for 30 to 40 minutes before he was found, according to Patrol Sgt. Darrell Elliott.
Liberty County deputies are investigating the circumstances of the child’s drowning.
