3 jail employees suspended after alleged assault of inmate

Three Baker Street Jail employees have been suspended after an alleged assault of an inmate.

HOUSTON - Three jail employees have been suspended after an inmate was allegedly assaulted at a detention center.

Sheriff Ron Hickman said that on Monday, an inmate, Jerome Bartee, assaulted a detention officer at Baker Street Jail on the way to the jail's medical clinic. In turn, six guards beat Bartee to subdue him. Hickman said that excessive force was used and that three of those staff members have been suspended.

"The greatest asset available to my investigators is the high-definition video that was part of the recent acquisition by my office...This single tool was what made this decision swift and decisive," explained Hickman.

Internal Affairs will now decide whether or not criminal charges will be filed. The inmate has since been released back into jail in fair condition.
