HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- Firefighters said early Wednesday a northwest Harris County condominium fire burned five units and caused water and smoke damage in several others.
According to the Ponderosa Fire Department, it was reported around 1:53 a.m. at a condo complex on Place Rebecca Lane near Kuykendahl Road.
PFD Chief Fred Windisch said firefighters had a tough time fighting the blaze due to the height and size of the building, so a second and third alarm were quickly pulled.
Out of 12 units in the building, five were damaged heavily, and part of the building collapsed, forcing firefighters to stay back.
Displaced residents took shelter from the cold in nearby condo units.
No injuries were reported, but firefighters said they had to make one rescue: a small pet.
Other departments, including the Woodlands Fire Department, assisted Ponderosa in putting out the blaze.
An early investigation indicated the fire was accidental. The fire chief warned everyone to use extra caution while trying to keep warm during the cold. Flames and furnaces should never be left unattended, warned the chief.
Temperatures overnight in Harris County were in the low-30s.
