FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – An alleged second victim of a cheer coach in the Katy area has made an outcry to Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office detectives concerning sexual abuse.
An adult female contacted a detective with the Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, March 29, concerning an incident when she was 15 years old. She said the owner of the gym, Devincent Phillips, now 40, made unwanted sexual contact with her when she was attending his cheer gym, Xcel Athletics, located in the Katy area.
The woman said she was assaulted at the gym, which was located in the 500 block of South Mason. After hearing about the first outcry, she decided to tell authorities what had happened to her at the gym.
Phillips was arrested Thursday and taken to the Harris County Jail under a $30,000 bond.
In late October 2013, a Fort Bend County girl made an outcry about assaults committed when she was a student at the gym. The actual assaults occurred in Harris County, where the suspect lives and where the gym is located.
After those allegations were made, many parents rushed to the coach’s defense. “I trust this man,” said Jana Lynch, a concerned parent. “He makes them work hard, but he’s not that person.”
Students said the allegations were “false.” Molly Fitzpatrick was trained by Phillips for years.
”Whoever is doing this is lying,” Fitzpatrick said. “He would never do that. I’ve been here forever and he’s never laid a hand on any of us.”
Detectives believe there still could be more victims. If so, any other victims are asked to contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office at 281-341-3863 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers, Inc. at 281-342-TIPS (8477).
