HOUSTON – Two people are dead following a crash along the Gulf Freeway Saturday.
Houston Police said the driver of a van traveling northbound on the Gulf Freeway feeder road somehow lost control and slammed into three cars that were stopped at the light at Edgebrook.
Those vehicles were heading westbound, waiting to go under the freeway overpass.
The driver of the van died, as did the driver of a dark blue Ford truck, which was the first vehicle struck.
The occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
Family identified the driver of the van as 80-year-old Teodoro Benavides. His daughter tells KHOU 11 News they had implored her father not to drive anymore.
He was on his way to his friend’s house just a few blocks away when the accident happened.
They are heartbroken and devastated that two people, including their father, were killed in the accident.
Witnesses said Benavides may have had a heart attack or some medical condition that caused him to lose control and plow into the other vehicles.
HPD has yet to identify the other person killed in the accident.
