SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Two members of a Houston-area family are dead after the family sport utility vehicle skidded into a concrete column along a remote stretch of Interstate 10 in West Texas.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says the crash happened about 2:30 p.m. Thursday about 14 miles west of Ozona and about 200 miles northwest of San Antonio.
DPS Trooper Shawn Baxter identified the dead as 14-year-old Tristan Johnson and 12-year-old Madeline Johnson, both of Sugar Land. Baxter tells the San Angelo Standard-Times 44-year-old Paulette Johnson, 21-year-old Shawn Johnson and 19-year-old Meagan Johnson were in good condition at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.
Baxter says the SUV apparently swerved to avoid a piece of tire tread, veered out of control, overturned partly and smashed into the column.
