KATY, Texas -- A 17-year-old was arrested after a quick-thinking neighbor called police after she suspected a burglary next door on Friday morning.
The neighbor heard her own doorbell ring several times just after 8 a.m. and proceeded to investigate. No one was at her house, but she saw a shadow in the backyard of the house next door.
She called 911 after she heard the sound of breaking glass.
Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to a home in the 23900 block of Indian Hills Way in the Falcon Point area close to the Fort Bend/Harris County line.
It was a multi-agency effort.
Deputies established a perimeter around the area and personnel from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office participated. The Katy Police Department provided a thermal imaging device to determine how many suspects were inside the house and it was determined only one suspect was in the residence.
Two Fort Bend deputies and the K-9 Unit from the Harris County Precinct 5 Constable’s Office entered the house and found the suspect hiding under insulation in the attic.
Omar Hassan, 17, of Katy, was arrested and charged with burglary of a habitation.
Deputies found three backpacks filled with items about to be taken out of the house by the suspect. Some of the items in the backpacks included cash, jewelry, game systems, cameras and camera equipment, iPads and laptops.
Hassan is in the Fort Bend County Jail and will see a magistrate on Saturday. A bond amount has not been set.
