HOUSTON – A 12-year-old autistic boy was killed Saturday night after he slipped away from his parents and ended up getting struck by a drunk driver on a southwest Houston freeway overpass, according to Houston police.
Police said the boy was on a bike ride with his dad around 5:30 p.m. when they somehow got separated. His family reported him missing to the police, but tragedy struck before they could find him..
About two and a half hours later, the child was walking in the northbound lanes of S. Post Oak at Main when he was hit by a black pickup truck. The boy died at the scene.
Police said the pickup driver was found to be intoxicated and arrested. Although the driver was charged with DWI, he may not be at fault in the death because the boy was walking in a moving lane of traffic.
The case has been referred to the District Attorney’s Office.
