HOUSTON—Nearly 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway early Friday when an 18-wheeler jack-knifed and crashed on the rain-slick roads, according to Houston police.

The big rig was traveling westbound on I-10, between I-45 and Taylor, around 3:45 a.m. when the driver crashed.  Police said the driver was going too fast on the wet highway when he lost control at a curve and struck the wall.

The fuel tank on the right side of the vehicle ruptured, spilling diesel across the road. The spill caused a major backup on the freeway and it took several hours to clean.

The main cargo in the truck was lacquer and fire extinguishers, police said. None of it spilled onto the roadway.

The driver was not hurt.
