1 dead, 3 injured in chemical leak, explosion at Pasadena plant

KHOU 11 News Reporter Tim Wetzel will have a report from the scene.

PASADENA, Texas – One person is dead and three others were hospitalized after an explosion at the PeroxyChem plant in Pasadena Saturday afternoon.

The explosion happened around 12:45 p.m at the facility which is located at 12000 Bay Area Boulevard.

According to PeroxyChem officials, a contractor was transferring a mix of chemicals when his equipment exploded. The force killed him and broke another contractor's arm.

Two PeroxyChem employees were exposed to chemicals and taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Authorities say there was a leak of an oil-based cleaning solution, but there was no danger to the public.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of the contractor," PeroxyChem site manager Joe Ainsworth. "We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family."

The company says it was too early to determine what caused the explosion and that OSHA has been notified and will investigate the incident.

"We have a very outstanding safety record here, this is the first time there has been a fatality here," Ainsworth said.

The plant manufactures hydrogen peroxide. Between eight to 10 employees were working in the facility when the accident happened according to the site manager.

"When something like this happens, it's quite a shock to the folks here," said Ainsworth. "It's an incident that sticks with you."
