HOUSTON –A taxi driver has been charged in the northeast Houston crash that killed two female passengers, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

The wreck happened in the northbound lanes of Highway 59 just before Laura Koppe Road about 5 p.m.

Witnesses said 56-year-old David Wayne Houston was driving his taxi erratically, swerving in and out of lanes, when he rear-ended a fuel tanker that had pulled to the left shoulder with a flat tire.

The two victims, Dorothy Britton, 84, and Sandra Davis Smart, 56, were passengers on their way home from a dialysis treatment, according to Metro.

The taxi was contracted through Metro Lift, a service that helps the medically fragile to get to appointments.

John Jones said it was the worst accident he has ever seen.

"He was driving radical, cutting in and out of the traffic speeding," Jones said. "The truck was parked where it is now. The driver was putting his cones out. That is when I saw the back end of the yellow cab, and I thought the yellow cab was going to come up over the truck."

The woman who was in the back seat was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman in the front passenger seat was transported to the hospital, where she later died.

Houston was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to HPD.

Houston’s sister said he was a veteran and retired postal worker who just wanted to keep working.
