TEXAS CITY — A SWAT standoff at an apartment complex in Texas City Wednesday ended with one suspect in custody and another one dead, police said.

It all began at about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday as Texas City police assisted the U.S. Marshals Service in an attempt to execute a murder warrant on a suspect at the Windsor Estate apartments located at 2801 FM 2004.

The suspect was wanted in connection to a murder last weekend in Harris County where the victim was found buried 2 feet beneath a chicken coop in the 5200 block of Mohawk St.

Police said the murder suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment with his girlfriend, who they originally believed was being held hostage.

The SWAT team deployed gas in an effort to get the suspect to surrender after negotiations were unsuccessful. That’s when the man’s girlfriend, who was determined to be an active participant, exited from a barricaded bedroom and was taken into custody, police said.

More gas was deployed but the male suspect remained inside, so at about 12:50 p.m. SWAT team members forcefully entered the bedroom. That’s where they found the suspect had hung himself inside a closet.

The man was removed from the apartment and taken outside where EMS personnel tried to revive him, but the effort was not successful.

No other people were injured.
