HOUSTON -- The heads of the Houston Police and Firefighters Unions explained on Tuesday why they want people to vote YES on Proposition 3.

Voters will decide whether the city should continue to use red light cameras to enforce traffic laws. The cameras have been a source of contention ever since they went up at intersections.

“There's good evidence out there that these red light safety cameras change the behavior,” said Jeff Caynon, the president of the Houston Firefighters Association. “When people get to yellow lights right now, they accelerate through the light and in cases where there are red light safety cameras, we know that's not what people do, they slow down and stop.”

People who want the cameras banned complain that they do not save lives, and that it's the city's way to generate money.
