HOUSTON -- Instead of asking for gifts for her birthday, a 10-year-old girl asked her friends for blankets so she could donate them to the Star of Hope.

Kristiana Alaniz dropped off 60 throws Monday at the shelter on Ardmore. Kristiana said she got the idea after seeing a news story on Channel 11 about children staying at the shelter.

"When I saw it, I felt sad that they didn't have anything to be with, so that's why I wanted to collect blankets to let them know someone thinks of them, no matter where they are," she said.

Star of Hope officials are praising Kristiana for her generosity, but said there is still a lot of need.

The shelter asked for donations of money, coats for adult men and women and more blankets.
