HOUSTON – A shelter in place was issued Monday after a chemical leak at the BP Texas City Refinery created a stink, company officials said.
It happened at about 5 p.m. when equipment malfunctioned as workers in the Power 2 Unit were performing planned maintenance on a sour water compressor.
The chemical was reported as smelling like rotten eggs.
BP officials said industrial hygienists were sent into the community to measure for potential health hazards, but so far, no health hazards have been detected.
BP said the smell was expected to go away in 30 minutes.
The shelter in place was initiated in the downwind locations of the refinery, but was later lifted, officials said.
