BROOKSHIRE, Texas – The Katy Freeway was a mess near Brookshire after three separate crashes on both sides of the interstate Friday afternoon.

The first accident involved an 18-wheeler that caught fire after overturning near Peterson.

Rubberneckers in the other direction may have caused a five-vehicle crash that shut down all eastbound lanes near FM 1489, according to a wrecker driver.

Only one westbound lane was getting through at last check.

Further westbound, a big truck overturned after going off a bridge. It's not clear if that accident was related to the others.

At least two people were transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. A third person was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.

Rush hour traffic was backed up in both directions.

Both sides reopened just before 6 p.m. but the westbound service road remained closed.
