HOUSTON—It’s National Moving Month and local and state officials are warning people to be aware of scam artists.

Authorities recommend checking with the Better Business Bureau before hiring a moving company. Make sure they’re licensed with the state and always read your contract before signing it.

A recent KHOU 11 New I-Team investigation led to the arrest of two men suspected of ripping people off by advertising a price and threatening to drive off with their customers’ belongings once it was loaded in the truck.

To operate legally, a moving company must display a valid TxDMV or United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) license number on the truck.
