N.C. school raises funds for HISD students impacted by Harvey

Some HISD students displaced after Harvey after reason to celebrate.

HOUSTON - Some HISD students displaced from their school after Harvey have reason to celebrate.

Second graders from Mitchell Elementary School cheered after students from North Carolina presented them with a huge check over Skype.

A school in Greensboro raised $33,000 for hurricane victims, and $10,000 will go to the HISD Foundation.

The donation will help students at Mitchell Elementary, since they are now attending classes at Codwell Elementary after their school was damaged.

“We're looking to purchase books for the classroom libraries as well as additional furniture we may need, chairs and things like that that are needed for the classrooms, possibly some technology if we're able to squeeze that in as well,” said Mitchell Elementary principal Elizabeth Castillo-Guajardo.

HISD found out about the generous donation over the weekend. Much of the money students raised will also go to schools in Puerto Rico impacted by Hurricane Maria.
