HOUSTON -- A Galena Park teen who claims her mother forced her to get an abortion said the pills used to abort the fetus came from an herbal remedy store. Moreover, while it may sound unusual that a product for unwanted pregnancies can be purchased over the counter, stores called Yerberias have been selling herbal remedies for all sorts of things for years.

Found mostly in Hispanic neighborhoods, some Yerberias claim to sell an “abortion concoction” where a liquid formula will trigger an abortion.

Most of the workers at Yerberias 11 News visited on Friday acknowledge that the concoction exists, but not at their stores because its sale is illegal. However, at one east Houston store, the clerk said for 38, pills could be had that would end an unwanted pregnancy.

11 News then took the product to Dr. Paul Fine of the Houston office of Planned Parenthood.

“To my knowledge, there is nothing in here that has known abortification properties,” said Dr. Fine.

The label of the product that bills itself as a vegetable compound, said it contains various barks and flowers.

11 News: But can we trust what's on the label is in the container?

“Absolutely not,” said Dr. Fine.

Scary thing is that many people believe they can end an unwanted pregnancy with an untested home remedy.

To be sure what exactly is in the herbal concoction, 11 News plans to have the liquid tested. Those results will be reported once they are available.
