HOUSTON – Mayor Annise Parker and healthcare leaders hosted a special event Saturday helping Texans get ready for Obamacare.

Hundreds showed up to get more information at the event on the University of Houston campus. Under the Affordable Care Act, nearly every Texas child will have access to healthcare coverage.

Healthcare experts were on hand to show people how to sign up, and to show them what the different plans offer.

Open enrollment begins Oct. 1 and several Houstonians say they are ready to sign up.

“I’ve worked over half of my life. I’m too young to get Medicare and there’s nothing else for me to do but to go into my pocket to pay for it,” Cecilia Fontenot said. “I’m not looking for anything that’s free, I want to pay my fair share.”

People were also given the chance to share their experiences and concerns with healthcare services in Texas.
