DALLAS - Dr. Curtis Boyd is no stranger to controversy. In 1973, Boyd opened the Fairmount Center, which was the first abortion clinic in Texas.
Boyd is the only doctor in North Texas who will perform late-term abortions to women up to six months pregnant.
"We see patients from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and across Texas," he said.
Now, the doctor has made a jarring admission.
"Am I killing?" Boyd said. "Yes, I am. I know that."
Boyd said he is an ordained Baptist minister who has now turned Unitarian. He said he prays often.
"I'll ask that the spirit of this pregnancy be returned to God with love and understanding," he said.
Those prayers are vastly different than the ones that are made by members of the Catholic Pro-Life Committee who gather outside his office in hopes to sway women seeking abortions.
"Well, we're certainly disappointed to hear any unborn child will be killed by abortion," said Karen Garnett, with the Catholic Pro-Life Committee. "But, to hear it's a late-term abortion in Dallas, once again, it's particularly devastating."
The doctor opened the Southwestern Women's Surgery Center last week on Greenville Avenue. By law, Boyd must have a surgery center in order to abort a fetus more than 16 weeks along.
But, opposition to the late-term abortions doesn't just come from religious groups. Rep. Jeb Hensarling, whose district is where the surgery center resides, told News 8 he is troubled by the facility as well.
Boyd said he too has been troubled, but said his plight comes from the torment that drives patients to seek his services.
"The hardest ones are the young girls," he said.
Girls as young as nine and ten have come to his clinic, he said.
Death threats have become a norm in Boyd's life. He was a close friend of Dr. George Tiller, who was a Wichita, Kansas abortion doctor murdered in May.
"I don't want the fate that befell Dr. Tiller, but I'm not going to be deterred because what I'm doing is important," he said.
Boyd said he tries to make his phone numbers and address as private as possible and has heavy security.

I have mixed emotions about this story. I can see a young child or victim of rape turning to abortion but too many stupid women use it as birth control. I don't understand the late term abortion. 6 months???!!!??? Unreal. i guess this is a subject I will never understand. If it's not a baby, then you are not pregnant.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Makes me sick. I dont understand why the baby cannot live and be put up for adoption. When I was pregnant with my first child, he had a severe heart defect and they told me he may not live through the preganancy. I was given the option of abortion. I chose to have my son on the off chance that he would survive. He did survive the pregnancy, but died shortly after the birth. I am grateful every single day for the hours that I held him and the months that I felt him moving inside of me. I could never abort a baby.

There are A LOT if kids waiting to be adopted and the sad reality is there is not enough people willing to adopt. Why place this child though a life of misery in the legal system??? That is why I am pro choice.

how many children have you adopted MADEINTEXAS??? I have children and I have passed though the same unfortunate situation as you have with 1 pregnancy. All I am saying is that I am tired of hearing sad stories on the news of people hurting babies because they didnt want them in the first place or abuse and neglect at CPS.

These babies are at 6 months and he finds nothing wrong with killing them. How can he sleep at night !!! I'm sure someone will get him sooner or later, he's already having death threats, someone will carry it through. He's a murderer plain and simple and then he justifies it by saying a prayer. Please, it's against God and His word, this doctors prayers don't mean anything. These children will be in Heaven and this doctor will be goign where he belongs soon.

Neisie000, Babies dont wait to be adopted. They are usually adopted before they even leave the hospital. With open adoptions like they are these days, people can still have contact with the family that adopts them. I would rather see a baby adopted by someone than to see it aborted.

I am pro-choice but do not believe late-term abortions should be allowed. I don't think anything past the first trimester should be allowed, unless it is a medical risk or necessity. If you are that unsure, then you should likely have the baby. However, there are some people that don't want children under any circumstance, or are not in the right place, or do not feel they can take care of the child at that time. You guys are suggesting adoption, like the course of the 9 months is a breeze. Most women have to leave work. Some may not have sufficient coverage to care for themselves during pregnancy. Some may simply not want to be pregnant, go through pregnancy and have a child to give up just because they made a mistake. Sure, there are people that seem to think this is birth control, but there are also some that just slipped up one night, or even broke a condom, or forgot to take their pill on time. Really. The mistake and consequence just do not add up.

minime13, you make a good point ! going through 9 months of pregnancy ,because the condom broke or you forgot your pill can be fixed by just killing the baby ! Giving up 9 months of your life as opposed to giving up the entire life of the baby . We are not saying you should have to keep this terrible burden (like your Mother did) I'm just saying give it a chance to see sunlight , & to hear a bird chirp , or maybe if it's real lucky it might find someone who will LOVE it .

Would someone tell me why girls 9 and 10 years old are having sex? Once again, I return back to God. Since God was removed from our school systems, we see this sort of behavior. If a grown woman makes a decision to abort, she will be held accountable for her decision. She will meet God one on one for that . Some women are so damaged by abuse and society that they know not what they are doing. They do not see a chance for change in their future. Again, these are the results of people not knowing God and his wonders. When people are down and depressed, into drugs and prostitution, they have no clue that they can have a brighter future. No idea that they are an unfinished piece of Gods work. How fortunate that one doc can give, for a price I'm sure, good clean health care. It's a good thing that he can live with his duty, for his burdens are heavy. I could not carry the weight he has on his shoulders. I pray for all to know Gods wonders, for they are vastly noticeable.

With all the effective birth control available, I don't see why people (even young dumb girls) can't figure out how to keep the sperm from meeting the egg. I agree that abortion is a terrible way of birth control. I just wish people would get smart and responsible. How about keeping the legs closed for a change ???

Why do people try to impose their 'religion' on others? Do you want other people controlling your decisions? What happened to separation of Government & religion? Why wouldn't that apply in this case? How can the Government (laws) tell you that you have to practice a certain religion or that you have to obey someone else's religious beliefs? If they believe the own religion, it is personal & between the person & their 'god' -no one else should be involved.
