VANCOUVER, Washington -- A Washington state elementary school will be closed Friday after a likely norovirus sickened several students and staff members.

Clark County Public Health has asked that Columbia Valley Elementary remain closed from Thursday afternoon until Monday to stop the spread of the virus, according to Evergreen Public Schools spokeswoman Gail Spolar.

All activities and events scheduled inside the building over the weekend have been canceled.

The school will be deep cleaned, Spolar said. Parents are asked to monitor their children's health and ensure that they don't return to school until 48 hours after symptoms (vomiting and/or diarrhea) have subsided.

The school closure affects about 500 students and staff members.
