HOUSTON – A Sugar Land girl dined with First Lady Michelle Obama Tuesday after winning the White House’s “Healthy Lunchtime Challenge.”

Devanshi Udeshi, 12, was one of 54 children selected to attend the First Lady’s Kids’ “State Dinner” at the White House on July 9.

The dinner featured a selection of the winning recipes.

“Our Kids’ State Dinner is one of my favorite events of the year, and the kid chefs who come from around the country never cease to impress and inspire me with their creativity and ingenuity,” Obama said in a news release announcing the winners.

This is the second year for The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, which is part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative.  Kids between the ages of 8 and 12 were invited to create a healthy, affordable and original recipe with the help of a parent. More than 1,300 entries were received.

Devanshi submitted her “Slam Dunk Veggie Burger,” which she created after discovering a new grain.

“When I went grocery shopping with my mom, I came across quinoa in the grains aisle, so we decided to try it,” said Devanshi. “I guess it tastes really good, so my mom and I created a burger recipe, which includes quinoa, a good source of protein.”
