HOUSTON—The Houston Health Department has reported a 97-percent increase in syphilis cases in the first seven months of 2012.

Three hundred and eighteen cases were reported between January and August.

While the sexually transmitted disease is treatable with antibiotics, more drug-resistant strains of syphilis are becoming more common.
