Gymnastics coach on bike hit, killed in Montgomery County

A local gymnastics coach, 29 year old Michael DeLuke, was hit and killed in an accident in Conroe Saturday morning.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas - A local gymnastics coach was hit and killed in an accident in Conroe Saturday morning, according to DPS.

Around 9 a.m., Michael DeLuke, 29, was riding on a bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle on FM 1488.

He was taken to Memorial Herman The Woodlands Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Friends said he was on his way to teach a tumbling class when he was hit.

Investigators said the coach was at fault in the accident. They said it seemed DeLuke didn't see the two trucks behind him when he swayed into traffic.

Andrew Ray was driving one of those trucks and watched the accident happen. "He came over, and I had already locked my brakes up going, 'What is this guy doing?' That's the last thing I think a bike is going to do on a busy road like that. Once he hit him, I mean, this guy locked his brakes up, but it was just too late." Ray said.

The other driver whose truck hit DeLuke was not injured in the accident. At this time, investigators don't expect any charges to be filed. We're told the driver did stop and try to help after the crash.

According to a Facebook post, DeLuke worked at ASI Gymnastics in The Woodlands.

The gym announced his death Saturday afternoon in a Facebook post.

One of his students was Deborah MacFarlane's daughter.

“Wednesday nights with Mike were her favorite. She would always beg not to come to some of her team classes but they are hard, but she wanted to see Coach Mike. He made her day.” said MacFarlane. "He was amazing. He had a smile that lit up the room."
