Raw video: Robert Redford in Houston

Mayor Bill White is teaming up with movie icon Robert Redford.

Redford is more popular these days for what he does behind the camera, especially promoting independent films.

And that is what brought this Hollywood leading man to Houston Thursday.

Redford is the voice in “Fighting Goliath: The Texas Coal Wars.”

The independent film chronicles the battle an unlikely coalition of citizens fought to block new coal-burning power plants from coming to Texas.

Mayor White is in the film because he helped lead the battle against the plants.

White, along with several others involved in the controversy talked about the unique effort.

But White says the fight is not just against power plants, consumers must do their part too. “If we just have to battle power plants, and we do nothing about demand then we will see prices rise and some of the lowest income consumers get hurt.”

As for Redford’s involvement, the mayor says he’d make a good Texan.

So on his first visit to Houston, Redford came as an environmentalist not a movie star.
