11:57 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 9, 2007
Get ready, Houston! The 20th annual Art Car Parade will be rolling through town soon.
This year’s parade is set for Saturday, May 12 at 1 p.m. and will feature George Clinton as Grand Marshal.
The Art Car Parade is your chance to see 250 of the most jaw-dropping, augmented, rolling works of art in the world.
More than 200,000 people are expected to come out and gawk at the stream of lowriders, classic cars, musicians, art bicyclists, hot rods, costumed rollerskaters and all other manner of modified moving contraptions as they make their way through the downtown area.
The parade began in 1988 with 40 vehicles and has blossomed into the world’s largest and oldest Art Car Parade.
The route starts at Taft and heads to downtown via Allen Parkway. Once it gets there it loops around the Heritage Society and comes back the other way.
If you want an early start, the cars begin lining up on Allen Parkway around 9 a.m. between Taft and Shepherd.
