Teacher helps build playground where every child can play

Recess can be a pivotal place when growing up.

Some kids will always remember what it felt like when they didn’t get picked first for kickball. So, imagine having to sit on the sidelines at recess because of a disability.

That’s what Toomer Elementary School teacher Emily Max says inspired her to make a change.

She applied to a contest Farmers Insurance was holding for teachers. The winner would get a $100,000 grant to apply however they like to their school.

Max wrote to them saying she wanted to build an inclusive playground for the kids who may not be able to play like everyone else. “I wanted a space where all of the components of it were accessible,” says Max.
