JACINTO CITY, Texas—A 15-year-old boy was charged with murder early Wednesday after his mom was found fatally stabbed in her Jacinto City bed.
Laura Moreno, 31, was stabbed multiple times at her home in the 11100 block of Verano Street.
Her son called Moreno’s sister who found the body and called 911 call shortly after 3 a.m.
Witnesses told police they saw the woman’s son running from his home screaming shortly before paramedics arrived.
"Her father called me and told me that there had been a tragedy," said family friend Arthur Zunnga. "He said his grandson had killed his daughter. I said, ‘unbelievable.’"
The police chief said the woman’s son was the only other person home at the time.
The teen allegedly confessed to family members that he stabbed his mother. He was taken away from the home by officers, who bagged his hands to preserve any evidence.
The chief described the victim’s wounds as "defensive wounds," saying she was stabbed at least 10 times.
The owner of the house who lived with Moreno and her son said there were signs of trouble.
"She had a temper. She abused him," he said.
The boy told police the same thing.
"He said that he had suffered abuse, verbal abuse, and he was tired of it," said Jacinto City Police Chief Joe Ayala. "And he just snapped."
Police said the two argued about the clothes the boy was wearing overnight.
"He was slapped… and that’s what led to this," Ayala said.
"I just can’t believe it. I’m still numb," the homeowner said. "I’m hoping this is all a dream and I’m going to wake up any minute.
The teen has been charged with murder and is being held in the juvenile detention center.
