HOUSTON – Wrecker drivers helped Houston police officers catch a suspected drunk driver who was traveling the wrong way on the freeway early Monday.

An HPD officer spotted a Cadillac driving the wrong way on 610 near Ella around 4 a.m. The driver almost hit the police officer, who ended up losing sight of him, but wrecker drivers who were hearing it all on police scanners sprang into action.

The tow truck drivers caught up to the suspect near Highway 45 and the Loop.

“He ended up turning around and going the right way on the freeway and that is when we caught up to him and we just followed him over here until the officers caught up to him,” Joshua Damon said.

Damon and his budddy kept police on the phone, leading them to West Dalls and Heiner while they tailed the suspect.

Officers caught up and found the driver with two small dogs in the vehicle and took him into custody. He was complaining of stomach pain, but police believe he had been drinking.

“It’s very dangerous. He almost hit a police officer going the wrong way on the freeway. There’s no telling how many citizens he almost hit before the officers were able to get him stopped,” said Lt. Larry Crowson, HPD.

The driver is facing DWI charges. The dogs were turned over to Animal Control until someone claims them.
