HOUSTON — The commute was slow on Hillcroft Avenue Friday where a big water main break caused big problems in southwest Houston.

The break happened at Bankside Drive, just north of West Bellfort Street, and lasted for about two hours.

Both sides of the street were quickly flooded with several inches of water.

Harris County Pct. 5 Deputy Constables were diverting traffic around the area. Drivers were advised to use Chimney Rock or Fondren for access to/from Highway 59.

A neighbor said the 24-inch water main broke around Christmas time and was repaired at that time.

Public works blamed shifting soil and said it’s common for 12-inch water lines to break. Their crews patched and began repairs.

Almost immediately, flood waters spiraled down drains; neighbors hope it’s the last time.
