HOUSTON – Mexican superstar Vicente Fernandez has announced he will undergo surgery in Houston to remove a lump in his liver.

Fernandez underwent a liver biopsy at a Houston hospital last month and doctors have determined that surgery is necessary.

"I am calm, with a lot of optimism and a lot of faith. I know that all will be fine with the surgery," Fernandez said Thursday in a written statement.

His wife, children, grandchildren and sisters are with him in Houston.

"I have been very spoiled by all my family who has been next to me through this entire this process," the singer said. "I thank infinitely to the audience, to the mass media, for their show of love, for being preoccupied and worrying about me, I ask all of you to keep praying for my health."

Fernandez, 72, has canceled his concerts for the rest of the year in the U.S. and Guadalajara.

Fernandez, the King of Ranchera music, performed at Toyota Center in October.

This was scheduled to be his farewell tour. Fernandez has said that he wants to retire while he still has a voice.
