HOUSTON -- A customer was killed Tuesday evening during a robbery at a Subway restaurant in southeast Houston, police said.

The deadly shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. at the Subway on MLK Jr. Boulevard near the South Loop, according to officers with the Houston Police Department.

There were two employees and one customer inside the Subway at the time of the crime, detectives said. The two teen suspects walked in and demanded money from employees, and then turned their attention to the customer who was eating at one of the tables.

Employees told police the customer struggled with the suspects, and then gunshots were fired. Both suspects then took off running.

Employees chased the pair outside and then returned to the store to find the victim, later identified as 36-year-old Christopher McGrew, dead.

Police said early descriptions of the suspects were vague.

“The suspects have been described as approximately 18 to 19-year-old black males, approximately 5-foot-6, 5-foot-7 in height,” said HPD Sgt. Thomas Biggs.

Police believe the duo got away with less than $100 in cash.

Regular customers of the store were shocked to hear the news overnight.

“It’s just sad,” said nearby resident Precious Milburn. “It’s just ridiculous.”

“That’s kind of messed up that you can’t even go to Subway now and days without being robbed and killed,” said neighbor Ricardo Garza. “I mean, I don’t even want to come here no more.”

Detectives hope video surveillance from inside the store will help lead them to the gunmen.

The restaurant will remain closed Wednesday.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
