HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -- An officer with the Houston Police Department exchanged gunfire with two crooks he said tried to break into his Harris County home late Thursday night.

The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. in the 16200 block of Madewood, according to deputies.

The HPD officer said two men identifying themselves as police officers tried to break in through the front door of his home.

Gunfire was exchanged, and the officer suffered a gunshot wound to his leg. He was sent to the hospital where he was treated and released a few hours later.

The officer told deputies he thinks one of the suspects may have been struck by a bullet as well, but both suspects got back in their car and fled the scene.

“It’s so close to home, too,” said neighbor Dalton Boudreaux. “… like right across the street. I live right across. Thank God he’s okay.”
