BAYTOWN, Texas—Friends and family are in shock after a teenager died and another was hospitalized when a shoplifting case turned into a fatal car chase.

Police say a couple trying to get away with a stolen comforter and pillows was speeding through the intersection at Garth Road and Rollingbrook. Their pick-up first smashed into another truck, then the teens’ car, causing it to burst into flames.

Lifeflight took 17-year-old Shay Hollinghead away in critical condition. Shawn Williams, 16, died.

"He was one of those people you just can’t forget. So friendly, so happy and so full of life," said Cheyenne Davis.

Williams sang solos in Sterling High’s elite choir, and by the look of things along Garth Road on Saturday, he touched a lot of hearts in Baytown.

"He was always nice to everybody, complimenting all the girls, complimenting everybody, saying, ‘Oh, you really nice today.’ He’d mess around a lot, make people smile," said Forest Hayes.

"To me, when I looked at him, I just saw the light of Christ. When I would see him in the hall, he would just smile and say, ‘Hey, how are you doing today?’" said Ally Connelly.

Williams was driving home from a shift at El Toro’s To-Go Kitchen when the accident happened. There, one of the managers Herb Martinez called him, "one of the most polite people I’ve ever met."

Friends are building a growing memorial at the crash site to ease one another’s pain. They say it’s the kind of thing Williams would do if he were here.
