HOUSTON—An early-morning fire destroyed at least 12 apartment units in northwest Houston on Wednesday, firefighters said.

The fire was reported on Jones Road at The Reserve at Steeplechase Apartments around 2:30 a.m.

Flames shot through the roof, destroying the two-story structure, but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to nearby buildings.

Witnesses helped evacuate the residents by going door-to-door.

“I was freaking out because someone came to my house and banged on my door,” said resident Alissa Foster. “I was like ‘what’s going on?’ So I go out of the door and they were screaming ‘fire!’”

“I woke up, somebody was banging on the roof of the second floor or whatever and then I started hearing them beat on the door. I didn’t know what was going on. Then, my daughter woke up. She said it was a fire. So then we got out of there,” said Zach Bukowitt.

Everyone, including Bukowitt’s dog, got out safely. They are all very grateful. Still, many were left devastated after losing their belongings.

“My laptop, my homework—my everything—my pictures, my memories,” said Kiarra Johnson. “I’m laughing to keep from crying, it hurts so bad.”

No serious injuries were reported, but one firefighter was treated at the scene after falling through the flooring.

“He had just a few scrapes but he got out, everything’s fine,” said Dennis Lee, Cy-Fair Fire Department.

An apartment manager and reps from the Red Cross were called to the scene to assist in helping victims find another place to stay.

“We’re traumatized, but OK, we got out. We’re safe. We lost everything, but we’re safe,” James Lemons said. “I’m kind of curious and disturbed about how something like that started.”

So are investigators who said the fire appeared to have started outside on a patio. They are continuing to investigate.
