CONROE, Texas — People at a Conroe car wash tried to wash away their grief on Thursday following word that a co-worker and good friend had been murdered over his cell phone.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Wilker Matute. “That could never happen. I would have never thought of that.”

The crime occurred Tuesday evening at MLK Park in Conroe.

Authorities said Geovany Ponce-Reyes was sitting in his car waiting to play basketball when he was shot to death during a struggle over his phone.

The shooter, 19-year-old Jerome Faggin fled the scene, but police found him a day later and booked him into the Montgomery County Jail. He was charged with murder and given a half-million dollar bond.

The victim, who was also 19, graduated from Conroe High School in early June.

“It’s not right,” said Domingo Lopez, who owns the car wash where Geovany had worked for three years.

“It’s not fair,” he said. “That person is crazy.”

Police said their investigation was ongoing and believed there could be others involved.

A makeshift memorial was erected near the scene of the shooting.

The victim’s friends came to pay their respects.

“I’m going to miss everything about him,” said Matute. “They left a big hole in a lot of people’s hearts.”
