ANGLETON – Angleton police have arrested a suspect accused of stabbing one brother to death and critically wounding another on Tuesday.
Gregory Shelton knew the victims and killed them during a robbery, according to police.
A neighbor called 911 around 9 a.m. to report the attack in the 300 block of West Plum.
Police found Robert Lee Rivera, 52, covered in blood outside the house. His throat was slashed and he had multiple stab wounds. Rivera was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was last reported in critical condition.
The body of Edward John Rivera, 53, was found inside the house with several stab wounds.
"They were stabbed the first time, tied up, then stabbed again later on," said Detective Sgt. Kirk Coleman with the Angleton police department. "Their legs and hands were bound with extension cords."
Robert Rivera managed to free himself and run outside screaming for help.
Relatives say the Rivera brothers did everything together .
Mary Rivera spoke lovingly of her late uncle.
"Eddie would give you the shirt off his back. He would give you anything you needed," she said.
Rivera and other relatives were relieved to hear a suspect is in custody, but they still have questions.
"It’s a peaceful area, we’ve been here plenty of times. It’s one of those things, we don’t understand why," said Juan Villarreal, the victim’s nephew. "All we can do is move forward and keep our heads strong for the family .We still have one we’re praying for to pull through."
Edward Rivera leaves behind 15 grandchildren.
Police are trying to figure out a motive.
