DWI suspect hits pole, knocks out power to UH apartments

HOUSTON – A suspected drunken driver struck a utility pole and knocked out power to student apartments near the University of Houston, police said.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. Friday on Calhoun.

The driver left the roadway, splitting the pole and flipping his car. Witnesses said the man then tried to get away, but UH police arrested him after a brief chase.

The incident knocked out power to The Vue Apartments on MacGregor.

"Our heat went out," said student Frank Garcia. "We're actually like, we have mid-terms tomorrow and stuff like that too, so I don't know how that's gonna work out tomorrow."

A few hours later the power was restored, but the pole was still in need of repairs.

The suspect now faces a charge of driving while intoxicated.
