Fallout at HISD after 11 News exposed food safety concerns
10:00 PM CST on Friday, December 29, 2006
There's widespread change in the Houston Independent School District after an 11 News investigation into food safety.
11 News Investigates exposed how the district put tens of thousands of children at risk for food poisoning.
Now there's been a major reshuffling among top food service staff.
HISD approved leaving school food out for hours at a time at dangerous temperatures where harmful bacteria can grow, threatening children.
That policy has since been reversed, and now a director who oversaw food operations for the district has resigned.
Then there was a different quality control supervisor caught on tape, apparently glad schools weren't getting health inspections.
Employee: "We have a lot [of schools] that don't have permits right now."
Supervisor: "And I love that ... "
Employee: "Why would you love that?"
Supervisor: "I love that because I know that if I don't have a permit, that kitchen will not be inspected. And I don't; I don't have to worry about it."
Now the district said the supervisor has been "temporarily reassigned to perform other duties that are not related to field inspections or investigations ... pending a review of the Quality Control Department."
11 News Investigates attempted to reach that HISD supervisor for comment on multiple occasions, and he has not returned calls.
