HOUSTON - Charges have been filed against the suspect who lead a Bellaire police officer on a chase that ended with the officer's death.

Dante J. Moore, 27,  is charged with murder for his role in the death of Officer Marco Zarate. The 52-year-old cop was killed in a motorcycle crash at 8500 Ferris Tuesday.

Before the chase, Zarate's body cam snapped a photo of Moore, who he had stopped to question about a shoplifting case at the Target in Meyerland Plaza. Police say Moore took off at speeds up to 80 mph and Zarate went after him. That's when the officer lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a parked landscaping truck.

After the body cam photo was released, Moore turned himself in with cameras rolling, escorted by activist Quanell X.

The activist claimed Moore’s family had reached out to him seeking his help.

“I wanted to make sure that nobody got hurt,” Quanell X said. “This young man didn’t get hurt with them looking and searching for him, and that they didn’t get hurt with them coming into our community looking for him also.”

Meanwhile, people continued to drop off balloons, flowers and share thoughts of the fallen officer revered for his dedication to the job.

“He just wanted to help and just be encouraging to everybody else,” said Bonnie Lumpkin.

“The officer was just doing his job,” said Darlene Wilkins.  “And because of some senseless act, he lost his life.”

Zarate is survived by a wife and three daughters.  He had been with the department for seven years.

Moore is being held without bond. He has a rap sheet that includes evading arrest, burglary and cocaine possession.

Authorities are still hoping to talk to Moore’s twin brother who was believed to have been a passenger in the car involved in the chase.
