Store owner shot during armed robbery near downtown Houston

HOUSTON – For at least five times in 10 days, a local hair store is hit by crooks but this time the store owner was shot in the leg.

The incident happened at the Mr. Indian hair Salon located in the 4800 block of Almeda Road.

According to investigators, two armed men wearing bandanas stormed into the salon around 2 p.m. shouting for everyone to get onto the ground.

Kehlin Farooq, 41, was shot once in the leg.

"He thought they were attacking his sister, so that's how they got into a scuffle," said Daaiyah Farooq, Kehlin's mother.

Kehlin's sister tied up his leg to stop the bleeding. He was conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital.

This is the third time his hair store has been hit in the last two years.

The crooks ran out the door and jumped in a pickup truck. A wrecker driver knew something wasn't right and followed them until they bailed out of the truck. Police are processing the vehicle.

HPD estimates at least nine hair or beauty supply stores have been targeted in about the last week.

"The [hair] bundles go anywhere from $100 and up," said customer Joyce Andrews. "If you get enough of them you can easily get $10,000 worth of hair."

The crooks did not get away with any hair.
