Standoff suspect lets woman go, kills self after chase in N. Houston

Houston police say a man who led officers on a chase and held a woman hostage overnight has shot and killed himself.

HOUSTON – Houston police say a man who led officers on a chase and held a woman hostage overnight has shot and killed himself.

The entire standoff lasted more than six hours.

It started with a police chase around 9 p.m. Monday on the north side where the man tried to evade officers in a stolen U-Haul van. A female passenger was forced into another vehicle where he held her hostage in the 3300 block of Omega near East 32nd

Eventually he let her go and about 30 minutes later, police say he shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was not physically hurt.

Police have not released the identity of the suspect, but they say he was in his 40s.
