Smash-and-grab fail causes big damage at Heights gas station

KHOU 11's Lisa Hernandez reports

HOUSTON – Houston Police say an attempted ATM smash-and-grab left behind a lot of damage at a gas station in The Heights early Thursday.

Around 3:30 a.m. three men backed a white van into the front of the Shell station along the Katy Freeway at Cortlandt. The men jumped out and tied a rope or chain around the ATM, and then they tried to pull it away using the van.

The ATM wouldn’t budge, so the suspects gave up and fled the scene in the van.

A woman working at the store was able to run to the back and hide during the crime.

The storefront was severely damaged in the attempted theft.
