HOUSTON – The Nimitz high school teacher and soccer coach accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student appeared in front of a judge without an attorney Monday.
Eber Lopez was arrested last week and charged with having a sexual relationship with a student. He was released from jail on a $30,000 bond. He signed a strict set of bond conditions before leaving the courtroom, which includes having no contact with the student.
Court documents allege Lopez had sex with the teen student more than 10 times. Authorities say the two would go to the Palace Inn on FM 1960 East. Investigators say they were able to confirm the relationship by looking at the student's phone.
The evidence reportedly included explicit text messages, FaceTime calls and photos that Lopez sent to the teen girl.
It was another student who alerted administrators to the alleged inappropriate relationship.
Prosecutors say the relationship started back on September 2015 and ended last month.
Lopez would not comment as he left the courtroom Monday covering his face with a folder and quickly walking to the elevator. No one answered the door at his home, but a neighbor said he's married and has a young son.
A judge is giving the 35-year-old a few weeks to hire an attorney before a next court appearance.
