Men crash truck into northeast Houston store, steal safe

HOUSTON—Houston police said a group of suspects got away with a fashion store's safe early Tuesday morning.

Around midnight a witness told police a pickup was backing into the Citi Trends on Mesa near Tidwell. When officers arrived, the suspects were already gone.

The suspects were able to knock a safe loose and steal it, leaving behind a lot of damage.

No arrests were made, but police believe they later spotted the suspects on Airline Drive. A brief chase ensued.

The suspects eventually crashed.

"Three suspects jumped out of the truck, ran on foot, two of them jumped in the bayou and started swimming east in the bayou. Officers set up a perimeter (and) called in a K-9 and a helicopter," Police Lt. Larry Carrow said.

But despite the efforts, the suspects are still on the loose. Police also haven't located the safe that was reportedly stolen from the store.

The crime has left customers are upset.

"Everybody shops here, this is the neighborhood store," Patricia Goody said. "I feel bad about it because they have so many sales and I hope they catch whoever did it."

If this scene looks familiar, it's because a few days ago, the Citi Trends store on Imperial Valley, just a few blocks away, was also hit.

Thieves plowed into that location and took a safe.
