HOUSTON - Leon Jacob remains locked up on the 6th floor of the Harris County Jail, but he's claiming he's innocent.

Couple accused in murder-for-hire plot appear before judge

In a brief jailhouse conversation with KHOU 11 News reporter Marcelino Benito, Jacob said "Yes, I am innocent, but no comment."

Jacob and his live-in girlfriend Valerie McDaniel, a prominent local veterinarian, are both accused of agreeing to pay a hitman $10,000 each to kill their exes. However, they were dealing with an undercover Houston Police officer. Their plot was hatched over several weeks and negotiated at an Olive Garden restaurant.

If convicted, the couple could face up to life in prison.

McDaniel was released on bond Monday afternoon. But Jacob will stay in custody locked up until the legal process concludes. A judge refused to grant him bond.
